NACA 2026 Honours Mandoza with Posthumous Recognition Award, Celebrating a Legacy Woven into South African Culture
The legacy of South African Kwaito icon Mduduzi “Mandoza” Tshabalala continues to resonate across generations, with the late music legend honoured at the 2026 National Arts and Culture Awards (NACA) with a Posthumous Recognition Award.
The honour celebrates Mandoza’s enduring contribution to South African music and culture, recognising an artist whose sound, story and impact remain deeply woven into the fabric of the country’s creative landscape.
Mandoza rose to prominence as a member of pioneering Kwaito group Chiskop before establishing a hugely successful solo career. His iconic hit “Nkalakatha” became more than a chart-topping song; it evolved into a cultural anthem that transcended generations, communities and musical genres.
His music continues to carry a message of resilience, unity, ambition and hope. From the streets of Soweto to stages across the country, Mandoza’s work captured the spirit of a changing South Africa and helped establish Kwaito as one of the defining sounds of the post-apartheid era.
At Downtown Music Publishing Africa, we are incredibly proud to continue supporting Mandoza’s catalogue to this day. His music represents an important part of South Africa’s rich musical heritage, and we remain committed to ensuring that his creative legacy continues to be protected, celebrated and discovered by new generations.
For us, supporting Mandoza’s catalogue is about more than the administration and management of music. It is about preserving the work of an artist whose contribution continues to shape South African culture and inspire audiences long after his passing.
The NACA 2026 recognition is another powerful reminder of Mandoza’s lasting influence. While he may no longer be with us, his music continues to speak, connect and bring people together — proving that truly impactful artistry can outlive its creator.
Mandoza’s music lives on. His legacy lives on. And we are proud to continue playing a part in keeping that legacy alive.
