How Downtown Africa Powered 100 Episodes of iThonga With Sync That Hits the Heart

Aug 13, 2025 | Featured, Sync Wins

A man in modern clothes stands confidently holding a gun, with a faded image of him in traditional Zulu attire behind. Above is the title “iThonga,” set against misty mountains. Text reads: “THE ROAD TO HELL IS PAVED WITH GOOD INTENTIONS.” Downtown Africa sync music vibes.
  • Client: Tshedza Pictures

  • Production Titles: iThonga

  • Role: Music Supervisor / Music Licensing & Coordination

  • Services Provided: Music curation, cue sheet preparation, composer coordination, rights clearance, artist pitching

When Tshedza Pictures needed music supervision that could keep pace with the drama and depth of iThonga’s 100-episode run, they turned to Downtown Music Publishing Africa. The goal? Complement Brendan Jury’s original score with music that could hit emotional highs, cultural cues, and narrative beats with precision.

Setting the Scene

iThonga isn’t just a long-running telenovela — it’s a cultural fixture. Our involvement began with a clear brief: bring additional music that elevates the score without losing its soul. We dug deep into our library to curate tracks that mirrored the show’s creative vision, then pushed further by working directly with composers to produce original pieces made to measure. Across 100 episodes, we ensured the music wasn’t background noise — it was storytelling in its own right.

Our Scope of Work

  • Score Tagging & Metadata Accuracy: We handled every update to the score, ensuring CMOs and production partners stayed aligned. This meant the creative team could focus entirely on composition, while we kept the logistics watertight.
  • Music Curation & Delivery: From intimate scenes to dramatic reveals, we delivered tracks tailored to the emotional arc and pacing of the show — always hitting the brief, always on time.

Key Highlights

  • Delivered music supervision and sync services for 100 episodes in Season 1.
  • Curated culturally resonant tracks that blended seamlessly with the show’s world.
  • Built a music catalogue that underscored pivotal moments and amplified emotional storytelling.

Collaboration at the Core

Great sync work is never solo. We worked hand-in-hand with Tshedza Pictures and a powerhouse lineup of African talent, including Green Vision Promotions, Shoxx Productions, Duma West Library, Thawini Creatives, Clever Talented Leaders, Kasirivu Productions, Sipho Ndlovu, Quinn Lubbe, Icon PB, Phumlani Mdlalose and RJ Benjamin. Each collaborator brought authenticity, craft, and a distinct sonic fingerprint to the project.

The Downtown Difference

For us, sync is more than matching a track to a scene. It’s about cultural accuracy, emotional truth, and creative precision. On iThonga, that meant understanding the show’s heartbeat and translating it into a soundscape that connected with audiences episode after episode.

From metadata integrity to last-minute cue changes, we handled the details so the production could focus on the bigger picture — knowing their music was in expert hands.

Why It Matters

The iThonga project proves what we already know: African music supervision can compete globally while staying deeply rooted in local culture. It’s not just about getting the job done; it’s about raising the standard for what’s possible in African television soundtracks.

We license, sync, secure and serve creators — and on iThonga, we did it at scale, with soul.
