From NaNoma to Nairobi Icon: The Beat-Builder Behind Kenya’s Music Rise

Eric Musyoka—aka Musyox—is a living chapter in East Africa’s music history. With nearly three decades in the game, he’s been the sound architect of Kenya’s sonic evolution, shaping artists and pushing boundaries from the analogue era to today’s streaming economy.

Born into a musical family—his father a guitarist—Musyoka started drumming at age 10 near the Machakos Showgrounds. In 1997, he co-founded the rap group NaNoma with the late K-rupt, signing his first (albeit terrible) record deal as a teen. From there, it’s been nonstop: music production, global learning, and label building.

After a game-changing internship at Bad Boy Records in New York, Musyoka returned to Kenya with the know-how to build a music business. In 2009, he founded Decimal Records, now one of the country’s most consistent and visionary labels. He’s produced hits, mentored talent, and never stopped innovating.

Musyoka has witnessed the full transformation of Kenya’s music scene—from radio days and gig economy to the era of DSPs, syncs, and licensing deals. He’s not just part of the story—he’s part of the structure.

“I fought to do what I love,” he says. “And I’m glad it paid off.”

Musyoka’s legacy is still growing, but the impact is loud and clear.
