Johannesburg, South Africa, May 2026 — Downtown Music Publishing Africa has entered into a new publishing administration partnership with Labelheaded, the independent South African music company founded by Wendy Verwey Bekker and Ian Bredenkamp.

The agreement will see Downtown Music Publishing Africa provide global publishing administration services to Labelheaded’s growing roster and catalogue. Sister company FUGA has also partnered with Labelheaded on distribution and marketing services, creating a connected support structure for artists and rights holders across publishing, distribution, marketing, rights management and catalogue development.

In its first six months of operation, Labelheaded has signed eight South African artists, including Maleh, Ross Learmonth, Pilani Bubu, December Streets, Espacio Dios, Relebogile Mabotja and Len Muller.

Founded as a safe space for African music rights holders, Labelheaded has built its model around an artist-first approach, personalised service, and a modern understanding of independent music careers. The company operates across label services, digital distribution, publishing, artist development, metadata management and marketing.

Labelheaded is led by two experienced South African music executives. Wendy Verwey Bekker began her career at Universal Music South Africa before moving into roles across entertainment, technology and independent music services, including OppiKoppi, Labs.fm and Ditto Music Africa. Ian Bredenkamp, founder of I Be Music, has worked across major international and South African releases, with experience spanning radio programming, music marketing and label services.

“This partnership represents exactly where the modern music business is headed,” said Thando Makhunga, Managing Director at Downtown Music Publishing Africa. “Artists today need connected services, smarter infrastructure, and teams that can work collaboratively across publishing, distribution, and marketing. Labelheaded shares that vision.”

“We’ve built Labelheaded to be agile, artist-first, and globally minded,” said Wendy Verwey Bekker and Ian Bredenkamp. “Partnering with Downtown Music Publishing Africa and FUGA gives our roster access to world-class infrastructure while still maintaining the personalised approach that independent artists value.”

The partnership strengthens Downtown’s continued investment in music business infrastructure across Africa, with aligned support across publishing administration, digital distribution, DSP marketing, audience development and catalogue monetisation.
