Update on the Status of the Copyright Amendment Bill

The Southern African Music Rights Organisation (SAMRO) has consistently advocated for fair copyright legislation by engaging policymakers and legislators. Regrettably, the Copyright Amendment Bill (CAB), in its current form, which includes the Fair Use provision, was passed by the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) to the National Assembly for concurrence.

Parliament is currently in recess and will reconvene on 10 October 2023. Unfortunately, SAMRO does not anticipate changes due to advanced constitutional procedures despite our ongoing efforts to avert the passing of this bill.

In the video below, Chola Makgamathe, SAMRO’s General Manager of Legal Services, shares the latest update on the Copyright Amendment Bill’s (CAB) developments and progress.
